Networking & Homelab

Building a personal infrastructure lab for real-world technology.

This project documents my home networking and homelab journey: OPNsense, routing, switches, NAS planning, Wi‑Fi, cabling, rack organization and practical infrastructure experiments.

Goal

Why this project exists

The goal is to build a reliable, flexible and expandable home infrastructure that supports real life: content creation, home automation, file storage, remote access, testing, learning and future projects. This is not a perfect lab built overnight — it is a practical, evolving system built with real constraints, real equipment and real use cases.

Current focus

Core areas

🛡️

OPNsense Router

Routing, firewall rules, VPN, dynamic DNS, network segmentation and secure remote access.

🔌

Switching & Cabling

Managed switches, Ethernet runs, patch panels, cable organization and wired backbone planning.

📡

Wi‑Fi & Mesh

Better Wi‑Fi coverage, wired backhaul, mesh optimization and stable connectivity for daily use.

💾

NAS Planning

Storage, backups, media, file sharing, future expansion and a reliable personal data system.

🏠

Smart Home Backbone

Network foundation for Home Assistant, IoT devices, dashboards, cameras and automations.

📹

Creator Infrastructure

Supporting video workflows, backups, editing files, cloud sync and future content production.

Equipment direction

Hardware being explored

OPNsense buildCustom router using dedicated NICs, firewall software and secure network services.
Managed switchesCisco and possible 10Gb expansion for NAS, workstation, access points and lab devices.
NAS / storageExpandable storage platform for backup, media, content creation and homelab services.
Rack organizationCleaner layout for router, switch, UPS, NAS, patching and future infrastructure growth.
